Process for Obtaining a Status Recognition Certificate – University graduate Medical laboratory worker
ServiceDescriptionParagraph1 Those wishing to apply for recognition as university graduate medical laboratory workers, must apply to the department of licensing medical professions according to the following procedures.
An applicant for a status recognition certificate as a university graduate medical laboratory worker must hold an academic degree in one of the following majors:
- Graduate of the life sciences (biology), graduate of the agriculture faculty; graduate of biotechnology.
- Academic degrees in medical sciences: PhD, MSc, BSc.
- Graduate of the chemistry faculty.
- A recognized MD degree.
- A degree in medical laboratory sciences. (Studies toward this degree are held in the following academic institutions in Israel: The Hadassah academic college Jerusalem; the faculty of medicine at the Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheba; the school of medicine at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa)
- Holders of a bachelor’s degree and higher (BSc,MSc, DSc, PhD) in medical sciences, life sciences, Pharmacology, chemistry, Agriculture, biotechnology, veterinary, nutrition, can receive a Status Recognition Certificate as a university graduate medical laboratory worker if they have undergone 6 months of internship and a government licensing examination.
A holder of a BSc in laboratory sciences may be granted recognition as a university graduate medical laboratory worker without requiring the internship or the examination.
The process for obtaining a status recognition certificate as a university graduate medical laboratory worker includes the following stages (detailed information appears below): 1.Submission of an application for a certificate by the candidate, with the required documents attached and Assessment of the candidate’s eligibility for examination or certificate 2. 1. Submitting an application for a license

Assessment of the candidate’s eligibility for examination or certificate
After the application documents are received, eligibility to take the examination is checked by The Medical Professions Licensing Department, and the applicant will be sent a notification inviting him to an examination, as per the address recorded in the Bureau.
As mentioned above, a holder of a BSc in laboratory sciences may be granted recognition as a university graduate medical laboratory worker without requiring the internship or the examination. (for them, the continuation of the process is as detailed in paragraph 4).
2. Internship

- The internship will last 6 months, full time or, alternatively, 12 months part time.
- Internship can be done at any recognized medical laboratory, in any of the medical laboratory areas as follows: genetics; fertility; clinical microbiology; immunology; clinical biochemistry; clinical pharmacology; hematology; blood bank; diagnostic pathology; general medical laboratory.
- It is up to the applicant himself to find a laboratory for his internship. There is no need to obtain permission for this from the Ministry of Health. (A list of recognized laboratories for internships can be obtained from the laboratories department at the Ministry of Health).
- the head of the medical laboratory is responsible for training the worker on its activities during the internship. The training must include, in addition to the specific professional subject matter, also the topics of safety and hygiene, quality assurance, quality control, receiving samples, registering samples, keying in and reporting test results and sample data into the laboratory software, calibration and confirmation of the laboratory instruments, maintenance and cleaning, disinfection and disposal of medical waste.
- At the end of the internship the laboratory head shall produce a written evaluation of the internee and will confirm that he has completed his internship period. The evaluation shall include details of the candidate’s achievements in each topic of the training as required. The evaluation shall be attached to the request, which will be submitted to the head of The Medical Professions Licensing Department in order to obtain a Status Recognition Certificate.
3. Examination

- It is possible to take the government examination in laboratory work before starting the internship, during or after it.
- The examination is theoretical and consists of the general laboratory subject and the specific subject (genetics; fertility; clinical microbiology; immunology; clinical biochemistry; clinical pharmacology; hematology; blood bank; diagnostic pathology; general medical laboratory).
- People directed to licensing examinations will be sent invitations, in accordance with the examination dates, which take place twice per year (winter examination and summer examination) and are publicized on this website (link to the appropriate web page).
- The candidate may choose to be examined in the Hebrew or Arabic.
A letter specifying the result of the examination (pass or fail), and stating the candidate’s eligibility will be sent to his home.
Appeal against examination results – A person who wishes to appeal against the examination results is entitled to do so within 30 days of receiving the results. The appeal shall be made in writing to the Medical Professions Licensing Department.
4. Temporary certificate and Permanent certificate of recognition of status as a university graduate medical laboratory worker
ServiceDescriptionParagraph5 Temporary certificateAn applicant who has successfully passed the government laboratory work licensing examination and who has successfully completed the internship, will be eligible for a temporary status recognition certificate as a university graduate medical laboratory worker. The official evaluation of the internee from the laboratory head and confirmation of successful completion of the internship period, must be attached. Those eligible will be sent a remittance slip for the temporary permit fee of NIS 229 (this amount changes from time to time). Payment can be made via the Postal Bank or via the internet The temporary certificate of recognition of the university graduate medical laboratory worker’s professional status will be mailed to the applicant by registered mail after payment has been made.
Permanent certificate of recognition of status as a university graduate medical laboratory workerAn applicant who has successfully passed the government laboratory work licensing examination and who has successfully completed the internship, will be eligible for a Permanent certificate of recognition of status as a university graduate medical laboratory worker. As stated earlier, the written evaluation of the internee from the laboratory head and confirmation of successful completion of the internship period, must be attached. Those who are eligible and who meet the legal and regulatory conditions will be sent a remittance slip for the temporary permit fee of NIS 343 (this amount changes from time to time). Payment can be made via the Postal Bank or via the internet The permanent certificate of recognition of the university graduate medical laboratory worker’s professional status will be mailed to the applicant by registered mail after payment has been made. Criminal record check – In order to grant the license, the Ministry of Health must receive certification from Israel Police that the applicant has no criminal record. The Medical Professions Licensing Department in the Department of Health will apply to Israel Police for this certification (this process usually takes several months). After it is received, the license will be issued to graduates who have satisfied all other legal requirements. By law, the Ministry of Health may not request this certification directly from the applicant.

- Application form to undergo a government licensing examination for medical laboratory work – 2 copies
- 2 passport photographs.
- 2 photocopies of your identification card, including the attachment showing your address. Tourists: Photocopy of your passport with a valid Israeli visa.
- Final degree from a recognized institution, or alternatively certification from the university that you have completed your studies and have fulfilled all requirements to be eligible for a degree in laboratory work (or any one of the majors listed above), which will be awarded at a certain time.
- Official certification of the date that you commenced and completed your studies.
Graduates of an overseas university are required to produce the following documents in addition to the above:
Overseas license to practice (if the requested license cannot be attached, a letter of explanation should be attached).
Official licenses to practice from the relevant institutions, stating the start and end date of the employment at each of the institutions.
A professional Certificate of Good Standing from the authority authorized to issue this in the country from which the applicant immigrated to Israel. The Certificate states that there are not and were not any disciplinary, negligence or professional ethics complaints against the clinical cytogeneticist.
All application documents must be delivered in duplicate.
Translation and validation of documents and certificates
- Original certificates must not be sent to the medical professions licensing department. Instead, only copies must be sent.
- A licensed notary in Israel must confirm that the documents are true to the original. The original notary confirmation plus one copy of it must be submitted.
- Documents in languages other than Hebrew and Arabic must be translated into Hebrew by a qualified translator in Israel. A copy of the original document and its translation must be submitted.
- Israel graduates are permitted to submit copies of diplomas, certificates of eligibility for a degree and certificates of practical skilling, where the fact of their being true to the original has been confirmed by the secretariat of the relevant faculty.
