Occupational Therapy

 
By law, the Ministry of Health issues a certificate of profession for the occupational therapy profession. 

On July 30, 2008, Medical Professions Regulation Act 5768-2008 (hereinafter the “Medical Professions Law”), was published in the in the government gazette. The law took effect on January 30, 2009.  The prohibitions listed in the law took effect on February 1, 2011.

By law, applicants for the certificate are required to be appropriately educated and trained (holders of a Bachelor’s degree as a minimum), and they must pass a government examination in this profession, as well as fulfilling all of the other legal requirements including citizenship, honesty and fitness. 

Anyone who is in possession of an old Status Recognition Certificate, which was valid on July 22, 2005, is eligible to submit a request to receive a certificate in the health profession without having to undergo the government examination. This eligibility is not limited by any deadline.

Anyone who was not in possession of a Status Recognition Certificate from the Ministry of Health in the past, or whose certificate was not valid on July 22, 2005, and provided that he completed his studies no later than January 30, 2009 at one of the academic institutions in Israel, is elgible to receive a certificate in the health profession without having to undergo the government examination, on condition that he submits his request no later than April 30, 2013.

Holders of an academic degree from a recognized foreign academic institution, who completed their studies before January 30, 2009, and who have practiced their profession in Israel until January 30, 2013 (up until January 30, 2011 without requiring a certificate of profession and after January 30, 2011 - subject to the availability of a temporary certificate of profession), in an establishment in which the manager holds a Status Recognition Certificate, are eligible to submit a request for a certificate of the health professions. The request must be submitted before April 30, 2013, along with a positive opinion from the manager, without requiring that the applicant undergo the government professional examination. 
The validity of all the other interim directives in the law concerning the occupational therapy, has expired.

An occupational therapist is only a holder of an accredited academic degree in occupational therapy, as well as holding a certificate of occupational therapy from the Ministry of Health.
