The next training course for physician assistants in emergency medicine is performed by the Ministry of Health's
Training and Development Department and is scheduled to open on 15.10.2017. The registration process is in progress and will be completed approximately two months before the start of the training.
The training structure
The training process will last about 10 months, five days a week (usually during the morning hours, but sometimes in evening and night shifts) and will take place on two parallel levels: theoretical studies and practical experience.
- In the theoretical part, the students will receive the relevant knowledge of the DEM (Department of Emergency Medicine) work, including professional medical content and various administrative issues.
The studies will take place four to five days a week during the first five weeks of the training, and after that, the theoretical studies will continue on a scale of one to two times a week until the completion of the training, parallel to the practical experience.
- The practical experience is an important and integral part of the training itself. This experience takes place in the hospital where the physician assistants will be employed. As mentioned, during practical training integrated theoretical study days are intergrated in the training center, according to the training program that will be given to the trainees at the beginning.
Location of training
The theoretical training will be carried out at the training center of the Ministry of Health at Tel HaShomer, while the practical training will be carried out in the hospitals' emergency departments, under the supervision of a mentor doctor in the DEM and the training team on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The roles of the graduates
The physician assistant in the Emergency Medicine Departments will assist the physician in receiving patients, performing physical examinations, performing various actions and treatments, assisting with the treatment of complex patients and wounded in the trauma rooms, supervising and accompanying the patients according to the directions of the Doctors who treat the patients.
Conditions for admission to the training program
According to the regulations, physician assistant are required to study in a training program that has been approved by the Ministry of Health.
To the training of physician assistant in emergency medicine may be accepted:
- Paramedics with academic degrees and practical experience
- MD graduates on behalf of a recognized institution abroad whose eligibility has been approved by the Medical Professions Licensing Department at the Ministry of Health to take the government examination for internship or the government licensing exam in medicine
- Physician Assistants with academic qualifications from abroad whose education has been recognized by the Ministry of Health
The procedure of registration and acceptance
The Ministry of Health has assigned each of the hospitals in Israel, which have a general MED or a pediatric MED, a number of positions for a physician assistants in the MED.
The recruitment of the physician assistants is done by the hospitals themselves according to the standards approved for each of the MED and is slightly different between government hospitals and Clalit Health Services hospitals or public hospitals.
- Government hospitals will publish tenders during June 2017 on the website of the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must apply for the position on this site for each government hospital and attach the relevant documents. The Commission will review the application of all applicants and will instruct them on the continuation of the admissions process.
- In the hospitals of the Clalit Health Services and public hospitals, direct contact should be made to the directors of the MED at each hospital in order to arrange an impression interview. Suitable candidates will be invited for a personal interview and if they are found suitable, they will begin the process of reception to work and then will reach the training.
