Treatment after Animal-Induced Injury

Service Description

About the Service

Rabies is a viral infection caused by the rabies virus. The disease is contracted by being bitten by an infected animal.
The biting animal must be put under observation following the incident to verify whether there is a risk that it is infected with rabies.
 

In the event of an incident with an animal, the following actions should be taken:

  • Local treatment of the wound
  • Contact the primary care providing doctor
  • Seek treatment in an emergency room
  • Contact the Health Bureau to receive advice as to the need for an immunization against rabies and quarantining the biting animal.

​Contact the Health Bureau to check the need to receive rabies immunization.

 

In addition, the Health Bureau will issue the quarantine warrant for the biting animal.

 

During hours when the Health Bureau is closed, refer to an Emergency Room. In case of a scratch or superficial bite from a domestic pet, which has an owner, and which occurred during hours when the Health Bureau is closed, it is OK to contact the Health Bureau the following day.

 

Requirements prior to receiving Service

 

​It is very important to arrive as early as possible after the incident, to enable the treatment to be provided as soon as possible.
In any case, the bite wound or scratch should be washed thoroughly with running water and soap immediately after the incident.
 

Required Documents

  • Details of the owner of the animal: name, address, phone number
  • Immunization card
  • Medical documents related to the bite (emergency room discharge letter, summary letter from the primary care providing doctor etc.).
  • The victim must arrive in person at the Health Bureau (if the victim is a child, then s/he must be accompanied by one of the parents).
