Basic Water Terminology

  • Water source - springs, streams, rivers, lakes and other water flows and basins, whether surface or underground (water rig) and also sea water for desalination.
  • Treatment plant - a treatment plant is a plant or system where a process is performed in the purpose of improving the sanitary quality of the water or to make them suitable for drinking water or reduce agents that might diminish the sanitary quality of the water.
  • Desalination plant - a plant where the process is performed for the removal of salts or minerals that are dissolved in water (mostly sea water or salt water).
  • Water supplier - anyone supplying water through a water supply system or a production plant to another supplier or water consumer, such as: water consortiums, local authorities, municipalities, Mekorot.
  • Main water supply system - a water supply system that transports drinking water from one supplier to another, such as The National Water Conduit.
  • Residential water supply system - the water system within the borders of the residential area (under the responsibility of the residential area or the water consortium) including, among others, the following components (all or some): pumping plant, water treatment plant, transport system, storage tower and water monitoring system (without the water source).
  • Drinking water contamination - deviaton from the quality stipulated in the regulations or the presence of any other agent in the water that might jeopardize public health.
