Water Supply Systems

Water supply systems are a link in the water supply network from the water source to the consumer. The systems typically include: pumps, water pipelines, reservoirs and water storage basins, decontamination systems, water quality monitoring and control systems, and if necessary, treatment plants as well (for treatment plants insert treatment).

Main water supply systems are differentiated from residential water supply systems:
  • Main water supply system - a water supply system that transports drinking water from one supplier to another, such as The National Water Conduit.
  • Residential water supply system - the water system within the borders of the residential area (under the responsibility of the residential area or the water consortiums).

The water suppliers, according to the Public Health Regulations 2013 - The Sanitary Quality of Drinking Water and Drinking Water Facilities, are responsible for the monitoring of the quality of the drinking water that they regularly supply. This in order to detect indicator bacteria for disease generators (bacteria whose presence indicates the existence of various disease agents) and to detect chemical substances that might diminish the quality of the water (stemming from corrosion and wear of the materials composing the storage and transport system as well as monitoring the concentration of treatment substances that are added to the water).

The requirements for sampling scope were stipulated in the regulations
  1. Water supply systems: the number of tests and frequency of sampling depends on the population size.
  2. Entrance points to the water supply system (consumer connections): the sampling frequency is determined according to the size of the population receiving water through the main connection (consumer connection).
  3. Water sources: the sampling frequency is determined by the type of required tests, the contamination potential and findings of previous tests (these tests are included in a separate report dealing only with the water sources).

Note - the guidelines for the placement of drinking water lines and non-drinkable water lines have been update din October 2012.
