The National Program for Addressing Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Types of Dementia


Many countries, including England, France, Scotland, Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Canada and the USA have developed national programs for addressing Alzheimer’s disease.

The Ministry of Health has taken upon itself a lead role in the National Program for Addressing Dementia, with a comprehensive vision, in inter-organizational and inter-ministerial cooperation with the Ministry for Senior Citizens, the Ministry of Social Affairs and the National Insurance Institute.‎ 

The Director General of the Ministry of Health has appointed a inter-ministerial inter-organizational steering committee for the implementation of the recommendations of the expert committee. The committee commenced work in September, 2013.

The vision of the National Program for Addressing Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Types of Dementia is to enable persons suffering from dementia and their families to lead dignified lives, with the assistance of quality and accessible services that are to be put in place; to address dementia starting from the stage of prevention of risk factors, through measures for early identification and diagnosis, treatment of sufferers at all disease stages, to the end of life, while implementing multi-disciplinary work and treatment principles and strengthening the coordination and cooperation between all those involved.



The program includes attention directed to the following issues:
  • Increasing public awareness of dementia
  • Improving the health services system
  • Improving the social services system
  • Developing a response to the needs of and direct support for family members
  • Making adaptations in the nursing home system
  • Developing and expanding the training of the range of personnel who treat these patients‎ 
  • Research and development.
