המחקרים עוסקים בנושא השלכות הטיפול בקרינה מייננת שניתן למחלת הגזזת.
חשוב להדגיש כי על השלכות החשיפה לקרינה ניתן ללמוד גם ממחקרים רבים אחרים שבוצעו ברחבי העולם באוכלוסיות ובנסיבות שונות.
ידע רב בנושא נזקי קרינה מייננת נלמד כתוצאה ממחקרי מעקב אחר ניצולי ההפצצה האטומית בהירושימה ובנגסאקי, וממחקרים נוספים שבדקו אוכלוסיות שנחשפו בעקבות קרינה טיפולית, אבחנתית, ניסויים ותאונות גרעיניות (כגון התפוצצות הכור האטומי בצ'רנוביל).
